Privacy Policy

Last updated: September 2, 2026

1. Introduction

Welcome to SpillLit ("we," "us," or "our"). We are committed to protecting your personal information and your right to privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you visit our website and use our services.

2. Information We Collect

We may collect the following types of information:

  • Account Information: When you register, we collect your email address and display name.
  • User-Generated Content: Book ratings, reviews, reading lists, and profile information you choose to provide.
  • Usage Data: Pages visited, search queries, clicks on affiliate links, and other interactions with the site.
  • Device & Technical Data: IP address, browser type, and operating system, collected automatically via standard web server logs.

3. Information We Receive from Google Sign-In

SpillLit offers Google Sign-In as a convenient, secure way to create and access your account. When you choose to sign in with Google, Google shares a limited set of basic profile information with us:

  • Email address: Used as your unique account identifier and to send service-related communications such as import status and account notifications.
  • Basic profile information: Such as your name as it appears in your Google profile, used only to pre-fill your SpillLit display name. You can edit your display name at any time in your profile settings.

Regarding the Google user data our application receives, SpillLit accesses, uses, stores, and shares it as described below.

Access: Our application accesses the Google user data you have provided to us, including your name and email address, solely for the purpose of authenticating your identity and creating and maintaining your SpillLit account. We do not use your Google credentials to access your Google account, read your Gmail, view your contacts, post on your behalf, or access any other Google services.

Use: We use your Google user data to provide you with the services you requested — to authenticate your identity, create and maintain your account, and ensure that reviews, ratings, reading lists, and other contributions come from real, signed-in members of our community rather than bots or anonymous spam. We use your email address to send you service-related communications such as import status and account notifications. We do not use your Google user data for any purpose other than as described in this policy.

Storage: We store the Google user data — your email address and name — in our database as part of your account record, so we can identify you on future visits, associate your reviews and reading lists with your account, and send you service-related communications such as import status and account notifications. Your Google access token is used only to complete the sign-in and is not stored long-term.

Sharing & Disclosure: We do not transfer, disclose, or share your Google user data with any third party except as described in this policy. We do not share your Google profile information with third parties for their own marketing or advertising use. We will never sell your personal information — including the email address and name you provide through Google Sign-In — to anyone, for any purpose. You can disconnect Google Sign-In from your account at any time, and you may request deletion of the Google user data associated with your account as described in the "Your Rights" and "Data Retention" sections below.

4. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Provide, operate, and maintain our services.
  • Personalize your experience and show relevant book recommendations.
  • Track affiliate link clicks to generate revenue that supports the platform.
  • Communicate with you about your account or service updates.
  • Improve our website and services through analytics.
  • Comply with legal obligations.

5. Affiliate Links & Third-Party Services

SpillLit participates in affiliate marketing programs. When you click on links to retailers such as Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop.org, Kobo, or eBay, we may earn a commission on qualifying purchases at no extra cost to you. These third-party sites have their own privacy policies, and we are not responsible for their practices.

6. Cookies

We may use cookies and similar tracking technologies to maintain your session and analyze site usage. You can instruct your browser to refuse all cookies or to indicate when a cookie is being sent. However, some features of our service may not function properly without cookies.

7. Data Sharing & Disclosure

We do not sell your personal information. We may share your data with:

  • Service Providers: Third-party vendors who assist us in operating our website (e.g., hosting, analytics).
  • Legal Requirements: If required by law or in response to valid legal process.
  • Business Transfers: In the event of a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets.

8. Your Rights (GDPR & CCPA)

Depending on your location, you may have the following rights regarding your personal data:

  • Right to Access: Request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
  • Right to Rectification: Request correction of inaccurate data.
  • Right to Erasure: Request deletion of your personal data ("right to be forgotten").
  • Right to Object: Object to the processing of your personal data.
  • Right to Data Portability: Request your data in a portable format.

To exercise any of these rights, please contact us at the email address below.

9. Data Retention

We retain your personal data for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide our services. You may request deletion of your account and associated data at any time by contacting us.

10. Children's Privacy

Our service is not directed to children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we have inadvertently collected such information, please contact us immediately.

11. User-Generated Content & Copyright (DMCA)

Users may upload images and other content (such as list header images, reviews, and comments). By uploading content, you represent and warrant that you own the content or have all necessary rights and permissions to upload it, and you agree to indemnify and hold SpillLit harmless from any claims, damages, or costs arising from content you upload. You grant SpillLit a non-exclusive, worldwide license to host and display content you upload as part of operating the service.

SpillLit respects the intellectual property rights of others and responds to notices of alleged copyright infringement in accordance with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). If you believe content on our site infringes your copyright, please send a notice to our designated agent at the email below, including a description of the copyrighted work, the location of the allegedly infringing material, and your contact information. We will remove or disable access to infringing content upon receiving a valid notice.

Accounts found to be repeat infringers of others' copyrights will be terminated.

12. Promotional Use of Reviews

We may feature reviews and other user-generated content in SpillLit promotional materials, including social media posts, advertisements, and other marketing channels. You are always in control:

  • Opt-in only: Your reviews will only be used in promotions if you have explicitly enabled "Allow my reviews in promotions" in your Settings. This setting is off by default.
  • Attribution choice: When opted in, you choose how you are credited — either anonymously (shown as "A SpillLit Reader") or by your display name (which can help you gain followers). You can change this at any time in Settings.
  • Withdraw anytime: You can turn off promotional consent at any time in your Settings. Turning it off will prevent your reviews from being used in future promotions, though content already published in a campaign may remain until that campaign ends.
  • License grant: When you opt in, you grant SpillLit a non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide license to use, reproduce, modify, and display your review content in promotional materials, in whole or in part, in any media format through any media channel.

A brief reminder about promotional use appears when you submit a review, with a link to manage your preferences.

13. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any significant changes by updating the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Your continued use of the service after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
